Although Agoraphobia means a fear of open spaces, the real meaning of agoraphobia is a fear of panic attacks. This is because you are frightened of being somewhere where escape might be difficult should you have a panic attack. Fear of embarrassment is also key as Agoraphobics also worry about what other people will think if they panic in front of them.
Initially you may have panic attacks for no reason but after a while you realise that these attacks happen more frequently away from home in a confined situation or when you are alone. You then avoid these situations for fear of having another panic attack, which causes you to develop mild, moderate or severe Agoraphobia.
Agoraphobia can be so debilitating that you may not even feel able to leave your house.
