In any given week in England 8 in 100 people suffer with mixed anxiety & depression; 6 in 100 people suffer with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD); 4 in 100 people suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): 2 in 100 people are affected by phobias: 1 in 100 people have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): & fewer than 1 in 100 have panic disorder. In England women are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders as men. The one-week prevalence of generalised anxiety in England is 6.6%. Anxiety affects your whole being, behaviourally, psychologically and physiologically. Often you are unable to specify what you are anxious about and the focus appears to be a response to a vague, distant or unrecognised danger. It could be anxiety about losing control or something awful happening.
Anxiety can take various forms – anxiety about a particular situation, which we call situational anxiety & is often quick; or anxiety just thinking about a situation, which we call anticipatory anxiety which builds up more rapidly. We may also have social anxieties, health anxieties or general anxiety.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder is long term anxiety which lasts in excess of 6 months but is unaccompanied by panic attacks, phobias or obsessions. It is characterised by excessive explained irrational worrying about everyday things, but the sufferer finds it difficult to exert much control over the worrying. Additionally the intensity & frequency of the worry is often disproportionate to the actual likelihood of the feared events happening.
