Pain can be described as "an unpleasant sensory & emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage" - The International Association for the Study of Pain. Around 16 million Britons suffer pain on a daily basis, which results in a major impact on their quality of life, both personally & professionally. This has a knock on effect as a cost to the NHS & the economy...it is big money. But on a personal level, it impacts massively in terms of well-being, relationships & finances.
Pain is one of the most highly researched areas of hypnosis & hypnotherapy & going back in history, hypnosis was widely used as an anaesthetic prior to the use of analgesia & chloroform.
Research has shown hypnosis to be an extremely effective treatment for both acute & chronic pain. Hypnotic suggestions for reduced pain & improved healing have been shown to reduce the time needed for medical procedures, speed recovery time & result in fewer analgesics needed afterwards.
Hypnotherapy doesn't cure pain, but we can help to manage the pain by altering the perception of pain, developing strategies to cope with the pain, & dealing with any associated issues. We use techniques such as distraction, reframing the perception of pain, numbing & dissociation. These techniques can help reduce pain, anxiety & stress; give you a sense of control; improve your sleep; & help you to feel calmer and more positive.
