Selective Eating Disorder (SED) comes under the umbrella of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). The Diagnostic Manual version 5 (DMS5) introduced ARFID to describe patients who struggle with impaired & distressing eating behaviours & symptoms but who don’t have the weight & body image-related concerns associated with anorexia & bulimia. The lack of nutrition caused by the condition could have serious implications for the person’s future health.
ARFID/SED can really impact on your life, causing problems personally & professionally. As you take steps to avoid eating certain foods, so you avoid eating in front of people. Areas affected could be family occasions, social events, holidays, days out, work meetings & so on. If you keep your issue a secret, people may attribute other reasons for your avoidance, most of which are unlikely to be positive.
I combine hypnotherapy & CBT techniques to help address the physical, behavioural & psychological aspects of this condition, & every client so far has tried at least one food at the desensitisation session - one even tasted NINE new foods!

Selective Eating Disorder is one of my favourite issues to help with, partly as I get to see the results first hand when people try new foods in my office!
