The word ‘esteem’ comes from a Latin word which means to estimate, so self esteem relates to how you estimate or value yourself. If the self evaluation of ourselves is negative, this can cause us to suffer from low self esteem. These negative self beliefs may have been formed from negative experiences we may have encountered as we have grown up, for example at school, at home, & from our peers & family, which may have influenced our thoughts & beliefs about ourselves. Negative experiences we have as adults can also contribute to the beliefs we have about ourselves.
People who suffer from low self esteem are often self critical & ignore their positive qualities. They can often feel sad, depressed, anxious, guilty frustrated & angry. Low self esteem can also impact on their work, education, relationships, social lives & their own self care.
